March 7, 2013: Domperidone and Sudden Cardiac Death

Domperidone is a medication often prescribed to individuals with diabetes and patient with Parkinson’s suffering with indigestion, heartburn, nausea and/or vomiting and bloating. This medication speeds up digestion so that food can move quicker through the food pipe, stomach and gut. Although an off label use, it is also being widely prescribed to breastfeeding women to increase milk production; this use isn’t approved in Canada or the US.

Recent safety concerns have been issued by Health Canada in collaboration with makers of Domperidone. There appears to be an association of domperidone with serious abnormal heart rhythms that can cause sudden cardiac death.

The European Union’s drug regulators have begun a review of domperidone as reports of adverse cardiac events have been raising serious concerns. Health Canada posted information stating the risk may be higher in those taking doses greater than 30mg/day and/or in those 60 years of age and older.

Those currently taking Domperidone and experiencing abnormal heart function such as palpitations, dizziness, fainting or seizures should seek medical attention immediately. If you are currently on Domperidone and have concerns make sure you speak with your doctor before making any changes to your medication.
