In this study, the authors determined the chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oils of Tagetes minuta (1). The essential oils were extracted using steam distillation method while antibacterial activity was evaluated by disc diffusion method. 70% of the components were identified as monoterpenes and 30% were sesquiterpenes. The essential oils revealed promising antibacterial pathogens with Pseudomonas being the most susceptible. The authors conclude that these findings provide a scientific basis for the use of T. minuta essential oils as a botanical pesticide for management of phytopathogenic bacteria.
