Phaeodactylum tricornutum (PT), microalgae extract rich in fucoxanthin, has been shown to enhance cognitive function in younger individuals. This study aimed to assess the effects of PT on cognition in 43 healthy, physically active adults (64.3 ± 6.0 years) who reported cognitive decline. In a 12-week, placebo-controlled trial, participants received either a placebo or 1100 mg/day of PT (8.8 mg fucoxanthin). Cognitive tests and blood samples were taken at 0, 4, and 12 weeks. Results indicated improvements in memory, attention, and reaction time with PT supplementation, as well as positive effects on insulin sensitivity and sleep perceptions. Although these results appear promising, further research with larger participant groups is needed to confirm the validity of these findings.
